FEW WATCHING MIDTERM DEBATES - HuffPollster: "In theory, at least, most people think debates are significant: Twenty percent say that they're very important, and 62 percent that they're at least somewhat important in determining their vote. Just 37 percent, however, report following coverage of any political debates this year even somewhat closely. Only 27 percent say they've actually watched or listened to a debate this year -- a figure that's likely much higher than the realreal number , since research finds people are far more likely to report watching a debate than they are to have actually done so….About a third of those who'd watched or listened to any debates this year -- just 9 percent of Americans as a whole -- said the events helped them make up their minds on who to vote for." ...ARE AMERICANS TO CHANGE THE CONSTITUTION? - Paul Herrnson and Kathleen Weldon, reviewing data Roper Center for Public Opinion Research archives: "In general, the public reject the idea that the Constitution requires significant updating. In a 2011 AP/National Constitution Center/GfK poll, three-quarters of Americans said the Constitution was 'an enduring document that remains relevant today,' while only one-quarter said it needed modernization. Similarly, a 2011 Time/ABT SRBI poll found 64% agreed that the Constitution has 'held up well and is in little need of change.'… Despite public aversion to major Constitutional revision, from the earliest polling the public has been willing to see modifications made through the amendment process. In the 1930s, the public was asked to give their opinion of an amendment preventing a president from serving more than two terms. Such a measure was supported by less than half of the public until 1944, when Franklin D Roosevelt won his fourth term….other proposed amendments have enjoyed robust, long-lasting support without achieving ratification, a testament to the political and structural complexities of the amendment process." Polarization on this issue became significant after the events of the 2000 election. In October 2000, the New York Times reported that "officials in both campaigns said they were braced for the unlikely, but certainly possible, prospect that Mr. Gore could reach the White House by capturing the electoral college while Mr. Bush could prevail in the popular vote." Enthusiasm for the popular vote at the time was moderate among Democrats, but skyrocketed after Gore won the popular vote while losing the electoral...
Democratic polling (unsurprisingly) shows much better numbers for Shaheen - Reid Wilson: "The DSCC will release a poll today showing Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D) leading former Sen Scott Brown (R) 51 percent to 43 percent. Shaheen has a whopping 24-point edge among women; Brown leads among men by 10. And Shaheen's fav/unfav ratings are a positive 50 percent to 45 percent, while Brown's are underwater by 13 points. The DSCC loves hiring Boston-based pollster Tom Kiley for New England races; he doesn't get them wrong very often." [ WashPost ]
