The renegade Radio Caroline, which entertained rock "n' roll fans in the UK and Europe from the 1960s until the 1990s from offshore shipboard transmitters and studios, is back on the airwaves from the River Blackwater off England's Essex Coast using a temporary, low-power license. It has plans to obtain a permanent AM broadcasting authorization. Radio Caroline was among the first, and most famous, pirate radio ships of the era."
Field Day is the climax of the week long "Amateur Radio Week" sponsored by the ARRL, the national association for amateur radio. Their slogan, "When All Else Fails, Ham Radio Works” is more than just words to the hams as they prove they can send messages in many forms without the use of phone systems, Internet or any other infrastructure that can be compromised in a crisis."
"If the infrastructure goes down, cellphones, iPads, the Internet, they all go down too," Wiemann said. "If I were stuck in the middle of the desert and I only had a radio, a computer, an antenna and a 12 volt battery, I could send an email anywhere in the world."
