"Our findings raise concerns since, depending on the pollutant, 20 percent to 60 percent of the women in our study lived in areas where risk of autism was elevated" Roberts said in a statement
Chair of Give a Child a Chance, Nicky Evans, said: "We recently had a private film show at the Reel Cinema for children and young people with autism to allow them to enjoy a cinema visit with their families. It is often very difficult for young people with autism to tolerate the noise, lighting and behavioural expectations at a "normal" cinema screening but we are able to adapt to this with the help of the Reel staff."
"I think public/private partnerships are a big part of the answer and the future to where we really need to be dedicated to doing things differently than the way we've done it in the past and being more effective with the dollars that we have but also taking advantage of opportunities such as the changes in Medicaid eligibility that are being debated before the senate this week" said Calley
Senior author Marc Weisskopf, associate professorprofessor of environmental and occupational epidemiology at HSPH, said, "Our results suggest that new studies should begin the process of measuring metals and other pollutants in the blood of pregnant women or newborn children to provide stronger evidence that specific pollutants increase risk of autism. A better understanding of this can help to develop interventions to reduce pregnant women's exposure to these pollutants."
