Quotes

"The identification of areas where changes are needed to the election laws, the introduction of advanced voting system, "
"Our 36-year old present constitution had been criticized by government and as well as opposition political parties. The entire society wants a new Constitution. Some people suggest amending the Constitution but we say to replace the whole constitution with a new one" Muzammil said
Vidyaratne said that Uva had once been a very prosperous area. It had been the granary of Sri Lanka during the Kandyan Kingdom. "The Wellassa area, the name known to have been derived from ‘Wel Lakshaya’ literally meaning one hundred thousand paddy fields in Sinhalese indicated how fertile the area had been. There were a large number of rivers namely Uma Oya, Kumbukkan Oya, Mahathetilla Oya, Badulu Oya, Koggal Oya, Kirindi Oya, Menik Ganga, Gal Oya which flowed from Poonagala, Namunukula and Madolsima mountain ranges in the province. If successive governments had not bungled there would not have been a water shortage in the province, he said. "Instead of introducing irrigation projects, the SLFP and the UNP have been busy opening bars and selling liquor to people," Vdyaratne said, calling upon the people to vote for the JVP at the forthcoming polls if they wanted a better future."
"Unless immediate measures are taken to prevent this type of incident in the future and political actors commit themselves to upholding elections laws in word and deed, the integrity of the poll on 20th September will be gravely compromised" the election monitors stressed
