...the proceedings with a flyover at 11am before Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman thanked those in attendance and spoke of the airmen's sacrifices. "Today's commemoration of the Battle of Britain is a moment for us to recall the heroism and the sacrifice that marked this turning point in history. "In particular, we remember Marlborough's own casualties from those fighter squadrons." New Zealand was the second-largest contingent that took part, Sowman said. "It was the Battle of Britain and it was also the Battle for Britain, in which the RAF [Royal Air Force] saved Britain from invasion and reflected a major defeat on Germany that turned the course of the war." While the Battle of Britain was a victory, people could not forget the lives that were lost and the lives that were changed forever, he said. Blenheim woman Marigold Miller said her late husband, Hayden Hugh James Miller, was a bomber pilot during the Battle of Britain. Hayden Miller, nicknamed "Dusty", flew Whitley and Wellington aircraft. When he arrived in Britain just as the war broke out, he was told he had to fight for his life - and that he did, she said. He died in 2009 at the age of 95. Royal New Zealand Air Force squadron leader Michael Gasson, from Base Woodbourne, then spoke of the series of aerial strikes from above Southern England in 1940 and New Zealand's involvement. "Victory in the Battle of Britain did not make history in the war inevitable, but it did make is possible. "But in the English summer of 1940, in that time, in that place, the choices were simple and the consequences clear - the choice was to fight or surrender and the consequences liberty or subjugation." Gasson said the country continued to celebrate the battle to recognise the "brave people who made the decision to stand, to fight and to sacrifice despite the odds". "I joined the RCAF and I put that uniform on and wore it for years. It's nice to see it back" said one veteran
"This is a historic event in the world of the air force, the air force association ... and all the cadet movements now, 74 years later" said Royal Canadian Air Force veteran, retired Cpt. Sam Newman
Gary Kellaway, from Southport, who was at the show today told the Liverpool Echo: "It's been fantastic - well presented, a great turn out and my favourite was seeing the Lancaster Bombers."
