The last Sections he headed in the Muslim Brotherhood before 1954 were both the Students Section and the PE Section at the Groups HQ

He has accepted Copts as members of the group and is willing to forge alliances with Nasserists and communists as needed. Akif, while faithful to the MB old ways, is open to new thinking. Akif underwent the strict discipline of the MB Special Outfit (al-nizam al-khas), of which he was one of the founders in the 1930s. He is also one of the founders of the MB international organization (al-tanzim al-dawli).Akif spent 23 years in jail, 20 of which were in one stretch from 1954 to 1974. His time in jail only reinforced his commitment, he once told the press
