There used to be a simple cure for this disease called colchicine, which goes back a ways. According to Wikipedia, "The plant source of colchicine was described for treatment of rheumatism and swelling in the Ebers Papyrus (1500 B C), an Egyptian medical publication. Interestingly Colchicum plants were brought to America by Benjamin Franklin, who suffered from gout himself and had written humorous doggerel about the disease during his stint as an envoy to France."
