But a potential bar to growth is talent availability: "Subsea engineers are in great shortage in the UK," says Douglas. "The whole industry at the moment employs 50,000 people and over the current year there will be 10,000 vacancies. But we have got a strong team of engineers and there's huge traction for individuals working in an SME rather than a large company. We certainly try to match the remuneration and benefits a large company will offer. Clearly with career progression you can't promise the same sort of structure. But we try to make this an enjoyable place to work. Everyone knows they are making a big difference to our growth rather being a small cog in a very large gearbox." Pipeline of talent
...But it hasn't been without pain along the way. When the Church cousins acquired the company, the 130-strong workforce was on a three-day week. "One of the first unsavoury things we had to do when we got here was to make redundancies" says Jonathan. It was tough, but the right decision. The 100 workers who remained returned to full-time working and morale improved...
...Executive director Cornish says: "What we offer to customers is incredibly recession-friendly in the sense that you don't have to spend a huge amount of money to give somebody a gift that really feels like it has value. That sense of attention to value is what we do." And what they do is in hot demand...
