...annuity results, as well as solid earnings in our life and property and casualty segments," said Horace Mann's President and CEO Marita Zuraitis. "In our annuity segment, assets under management increased 11% over the 12 months, and the interest spread was better than expected. For the life segment, net income decreased primarily due to a more normal level of mortality losses. The property and casualty combined ratio of 102.7% reflected the impact of 16.3 points of catastrophe losses driven by May and June hail storms. Annuity sales were strong, up 34%, led by a successful full quarter of fixed indexed annuity sales. Life sales increased significantly, reflecting growth in both single premium and recurring premium products, and property and casualty sales increased 2%."
...a financial advisor in Midlothian, Virginia, said he fields regular inquiries about investing in gold and tries to dissuade his clients. "The problem is when they want to invest in gold is usually the worst time to invest in gold" he said
The Good News The economy has reversed course and is now growing. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Thailand's " gross domestic product from April through June likely grew 1% over the previous period ". Consumer confidence is skyrocketing as the government pushes a campaign to "return to happiness". For the time being, Thailand may be happy with their military junta, but elections in the future are likely to upset many. The Thai baht is rising to its highest levels since November. Weak monsoon rains in India have allowed Thailand to "reclaim its status as the world's top rice exporter" , which will hopefully enable the country to offload rice purchased in preceding years through government subsidy programs. Military rule has its benefits. Numerous "grey industries" are under attack from the military government, who has declared a "War on Vice". Motivations for the crackdown may be political, but the results should be applauded. The Bad News Recovery remains slow. As with any new government, policies take months (if not years) to prepare and implement. One can only hope that the military is more effective at pushing forward much-needed changes. Political unrest has driven some tourists away . Tourism accounts for 16.7% of Thailand's GDP. The divide between rich and poor has not been addressed. Much of the political divide seen today stems from this flawed social structuring . The elections will eventually come. The junta has delayed elections for at least one year , but when election season comes around, expect uncertainty."
However, target-date funds aren't always as straightforward as you may think. "I recently sat with one of my clients who had all of his money in a 2010 target-date fund" Cucchiaro says
