General: Boko Haram (Hausa for "western education forbidden") is a Nigerian militant Islamist group that seeks the imposition of Shariah law throughout all 36 states of Nigeria. [ The group was founded in 2004, by Ustaz Mohammed Yusuf, who set up a base they called "Afghanistan" in Kanamma, Yobe State. Yusuf calls for democracy and the education system to change, or else "this war that is yet to start would continue for long" In Bauchi the group was reported as refusing to mix with local people, and opposes Western education, Western culture, and science. The group includes members who come from neighbouring Chad and speak only Arabic.
