Quotes

"FORMER Ceann Comhairle John O'Donoghue has become the latest member of the Fianna Fail 'old guard' to criticise the party's performance in Opposition. And the former Cabinet minister has put party chiefs on alert by indicating a potential desire to run in the next general election."
"There are some positive elements in today's crime figures but equally there are worrying trends that need to be addressed. I think it is extremely important that the garda budget is protected for 2015. I welcome the fact that new gardaí are in training in Templemore, they will be much needed additions to the garda ranks and more personnel are required to police communities and help protect the public."
Deputy McConalogue stated, "This grant is essential for the upkeep and maintenance of schools right across the country. The suspension of the grant two years ago created a substantial backlog in the number of schools needing urgent improvements. Many were forced to run up huge debts to pay for essential works like roof repairs, window replacement and toilet upgrades after the grant was rescinded. The basic allocation of €5,500 per school alleviates some of the financial pressure on management however, the axing of the grant this year will see schools relying on loans or having to ask parents to foot the bill for any additional work."
Michael McCarthy TD, Chairman of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht, said: "There has been much commentary recently on housing demand and supply in Ireland with some warning of a housing shortage, coupled with sharp price rises, particularly in large urban areas, due to the low rate of housing construction since the property and construction crash. Tomorrow, we will have an opportunity to focus on supply and demand in both the domestic and commercial property markets when we meet with Dr Peter Stafford, Director of Property Industry Ireland. Established in 2011, Property Industry Ireland is a representative organisation with almost 90 member firms drawn from all of the main sub-sectors of the Irish property industry. It's a chance to engage with an organisation representing many sections of the property sector to get the industry's perspectives on the current state of the Irish property market and discuss the key issues affecting the property market."
