Ward, IIED's founder , said: "We have forgotten how to be good guests, how to walk lightly on the earth as its other creatures do."
Organized under the theme "Shaping the Future of Natural Resources the World Resources Forum (WRF) 2014 conference is expected to draw more than 500 participants ranging from researchers to policymakers, and businesses to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the public. The 2014 conference agenda will comprise high-level and plenary sessions, workshops and scientific sessions. The workshops, organized by WRF partners, will address topics regarding: global targets for sustainable natural resource use; circular economy; eco-parks; resource wisdom in cities; sustainable recycling industries; diversification of the energy matrix; and decoupling strategies for sustainable development. Scientific sessions are expected to include presentations by over 100 scientists and researchers from all around the world on themes including: innovation for resource efficiency; policies and stakeholder participation; recycling industries and cities; and forestry and climate change. The WRF 2014 will also seek to provide inputs for discussions at the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UN Framework ConventionFramework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)."
"The responsibilities of the State Parties in all of the above respects should not be viewed as stopping at their borders," they stressed. "Climate change is a global threat to human rights that requires global cooperation to solve, in accordance with the principle of international cooperation firmly entrenched in the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and a host of human rights treaties and declarations. States must work together in good faith to protect the environment that supports and enables the full enjoyment of our human rights."
"The threats to biodiversity continue. But where do these threats come from? They come from public policies, corporate policies and other factors that come from the socio-economic sector. These are population increase, consumption increase, more pollution, climate change. These are some of the big drivers of loss of biodiversity,” said de Souza Dias."
