"Maine's substance-testing law is an outlier in a number of ways," the DOL said in a previous announcement. "Maine is the only state that does not allow probable-cause testing for the first accident; fully exempts employers who have just one employee subject to federal testing; and requires employers to pay for any [Employee Assistance Programs] or uncovered drug rehab costs."
"Employers are struggling with issues related to substance use and abuse in the workplace. Our labor laws should provide clarity and support safety for workers and customers" said Governor Paul R LePage...
A statement from the company reads: "Effective immediately all Old Town mill operations will be indefinitely suspended. The impact of foreign competition and our competitive position due to high wood and energy costs have made it difficult to sustain operations at this time."
