"We know that our mission is to produce students who will be able to read, write, and think, and the March of Dimes Reading Champions program helps to promote this through the daily reading that our students do.”  Said Greg Miller, principal at T C Martin Elementary School.  “We also know that we want our students to be altruistic--to be able to work on worthy causes for a better society, and to develop the sense of caring that will make them responsible adults. We love to participate every year in the March of Dimes Reading Champions."
The principal called Mathabel on June 5 and said, "Darin is not to be in school." Mathabel responded that her son "is entitled to be in school and to be educated." The principal allowed Simak to stay at school but he spent the day in the office for "in-school suspension."
"He approached his teacher and handed over the toy gun: “I’m not a-sp’osed to have this,” Simak recalled to WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh. With that, Simak was sent to the office at Martin Elementary School in New Kensington, Pennsylvania — about 20 miles northwest of Pittsburgh — and suspended, said his mother, Jennifer Mathabel."
