Quotes

"It's the city's concern that the class would like the city to pay the funds right now out of existing budget dollars," she said. "The idea that taxpayers won't pay in some form or fashion isn't true. In essence, the residents are suing the city and thus suing themselves."
It continued: "Yet, as dire as the city's circumstances are today, it has not yet experienced the full impact of its insolvency. Absent a comprehensive restructuring, the percentage of general fund revenues that must be devoted to servicing its legacy liabilities is set to almost double to more than 70% by 2020. The vast majority of this dramatic projected increase in the city's legacy liabilities will be pension and healthcare obligations, which represent at least $9 billion of the city's current $11 billion in unsecured claims and which are the subject of core settlements under the plan. If the city is trapped in a downward spiral today (and it is), imagine the severity and speed of that spiral when the revenues available to provide municipal services are cut in half."
"It occurs to me that the city of Kalamazoo may wish to ask its lobbyist to track the progress of this bill, be aware of what committee it's in, determine whether or not a public hearing will be taking place on it and monitor the course of the legislation so that there's every opportunity that if the sunset of Public Act 329 is extended to allow for further negotiations with retirees and employees on this important issue" Keller said
"The city of Detroit needs to get its stuff together" Jennings said
