...be shipping to the Czech Nuclear Research Institute is lithium beryllium fluoride - commonly referred to as FLiBe," Binder said by email in 2011. "The chemical composition is 2LiF-BeF2. The key aspect of the material is that its lithium has been isotopically separated such that it contains 99.993% lithium-7 (as compared to naturally occurring lithium, which only contains 92.5% lithium-7). The available salt is legacy material from the MSRE and is currently stored in five containers, somewhat larger than 55-gallon drums. solidified into a chemically inert, mechanically durable, solid block with a melting point of 459 °C (858°F)."
According to the US Embassy in Prague, the tests to be carried out at Řež will feed into US and Czech research and development on such reactors. "The experiments using the fluoride salt coolant in Řež’s critical test facility will provide valuable data that can verify our understanding of the physics and help strengthen analysis tools needed for conceptual design of advanced reactors that might utilize molten fluoride salt coolants" according to ORNL director Thom Mason
"The Dual Fluid Reactor, DFR, is a novel nuclear reactor concept based on the Generation IV Molten-Salt Reactor (MSR) concept and the liquid-metal cooled reactors (SFR, LFR) with the major improvement that the molten-salt fuel is not used as coolant but the heat is removed in a separate liquid-lead loop."
..."Is fission kind of played out, or is there something left to innovate here?" Wilson said he asked himself. "And I realized that I had hit upon something that I think has this huge potential to change the world." Instead of finding a new way to boil water, Wilson's compact, molten salt reactor found a way to heat up gas. That is, really heat it up...
