Gillian Guy, Citizens Advice chief executive, said: "People are being hounded in their homes by unscrupulous financial firms. Without a ban on cold calling for financial services people are at risk of losing some of their pension to scams or paying upfront fees for services that don't deliver."
"As a nation we're simply not saving enough," he said. "There needs to be a radical shift in the savings culture, especially as we're living longer meaning the savings have to last longer, and because in the future the state is unlikely to provide the same level of support as it has previously done, so we need to be more self-reliant."
Warrington said: "Those in their 40s and 50s are most likely to have family living at home, which means their food and energy bills are likely to be higher."
