...Naga Hoho said the slogan of Assam Rifles as " friends of the hill people' was meaningless if they continue harassing people under the guise of law and order vis-à-vis the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. The Naga Hoho also expressed sadness over the act of vandalism meted out by the public of Kiphire town' when they went to the extent of damaging the residence of the Deputy Commissioner, a public property. It opined, that instead, the people should have cooperated with the district administration in order to book the culprits so as to 'impose befitting penalty' which could have been exemplary for those armed forces operating in Naga areas. Naga Hoho also appealed to the Nagaland Government to 'look into the matter with all seriousness and remove the social unrest without further delay. In a separate release the EasternEastern Nagaland People's Organisation(ENPO) has held the Captain of 7 Assam Rifles unit in Kiphire, responsible for the whole episode that manifested and culminated from his 'mischief'. In a release issued by ENPO Vice President Sashi Naga and General secretary N T Thamlong Phom demanded that the officer be awarded the 'most befitting and exemplary punishment' to demonstrate the 'resolve and commitment' of the 'Indian Government towards Naga people' to show 'what has changed in the last 60 years'. They opined that the Kiphire incident was a 'chilling reminder of the turmoil and inhuman sufferings experienced by the Nagas at the hands of the Indian Army in the early 50s. At the same time, ENPO said that it was 'very unpleasant and unfortunate' that people 'resorted to violence by destroying Government or public properties'. It said such incidents should never be repeated in future and appealed to people to remain 'patient, calm and abide by the law of the land'. ENPO also affirmed that it will stand by the people of Kiphire to ensure that justice was done. It may be recalled, that curfew under Sec 144 Cr. P C imposed on April 28 was relaxed on Tuesday. The state government has also ordered an inquiry into the incident to ascertain the causes and factors that led to the various acts of violent incident. UNI AS SRC111"
