...contig, resolve plasmids, and detect base modifications such as methylation," said Jonas Korlach, Chief Scientific Officer of Pacific Biosciences. "Scientists researching infectious diseases recognize that the PacBio RS II is the ideal technology platform for this application, providing the most cost-effective way to get a complete genomic picture of these important disease pathogens."
"In Europe, hospitals are collecting hundreds of samples for identifying these bacteria but in India there are just sporadic efforts to identify these bugs. There is certainly no cause for panic as of now but laboratories all over the country which are equipped to handle such studies should launch a collaborative effort for spotting these bacteria in different hospitals" Khan told PTI
Dr Bruce Geller of Oregon State University - the author of the study - said: "NDM-1 has spread rapidly to many bacterial pathogens, including E coli, Acinetobacter baumannii and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Many of these pathogens are resistant to multiple antibiotics, which limits treatment options."
"We wanted to check hospital waste and sewage to find out if any bacteria has developed, which we may not know. This is a dangerous sign, indicating the start of the evolution of superbugs. No need for panic though. It could be dangerous particularly for HIV or cancer patients" , Dr Khan said
