"There is no miracle solution to this, it won't stop overnight. But it's not as if the government is sitting back and doing nothing" said Mathur, a microbiologist at the state-run All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi
Director of McMaster's Michael G DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research and lead researcher on the study, Gerard Wright, said that "It was a lucky hit. It tells us that going back to those environmental organisms, where we got antibiotics in the first place, is a really good idea."
Still, bacteria could someday find a way to outwit AMA . "I can't imagine anything we could make where resistance would never be an issue," he says. "At the end of the day, this is evolution and you can't fight evolution."
...not only in clinics but in the environmentin contaminated water in South Asiawhich has contributed to its spread over the globe," explains Wright. "Our thinking was that if we could find a molecule that blocks NDM-1 then these antibiotics would be useful again."
