After the drop in passenger figures was reported in the Belfast Telegraph on Monday, Translink released the following statement: "Enterprise cross-border passenger numbers have been affected by the main Belfast - Dublin road upgrade and a general downturn in the Republic of Ireland economy that also resulted in a typical 20% dip in intercity rail travel across the whole of the Republic. "In 2012-13, Enterprise saw passenger growth of over 10% with ongoing discounted online fares and benefits such as free onboard wifi continuing to prove extremely popular with customers.""
...at Jordanstown by Frank Moore, Translink NI Railways Route Manager and local Councillor Ken Robinson, who has also been lobbying on this issue. "I must commend both Translink for the effort that they have put in to the Larne Line in the last decade and the work of local representatives such as Cllr Robinson who have also pressed for improvements and are now seeing them come to fruition" concluded the DUP MLA
"We continually promote our everyday best value fares like our smartlink products and mlink for rail and ylink discount for young people and want to say to our customers stop paying more than you need to and look for the best fare deal. We are reducing the initial purchase of a smartlink card from 6th May to £1 – but it is already free if you buy on line."
Committee chair Jimmy Spratt MLA told the meeting that when Translink announced in 2012 it was facing £17m losses "the committee stated that the department would respond to Translink threats to increase fares with a bailout"
