"I have to tell you, that's mathematically impossible. There are thousands of us" Foster said
...Bergeron Daily News Staff NATICK - Holding her young daughter by the hand, Leslie Magner paused a bit to listen to Jennie Backstrom soulfully sing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow’’ before stepping into the festive swirl of Natick Days. Despite gray skies, crowds of children and adults watched jugglers, decorated cookies and munched fried dough and hot dogs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Natick Commons for the 16th annual event to have fun and support the town’s youth and service organizations. Jon Marshall, director of the Recreation and Parks Department which has organized Natick Days since 1998 said the event "provides a great opportunity to raise awareness about and show support for the youth and service organizations that give so much to our community.’’ Motioning across the busy Commons, he said more than 100 booths and tables were providing information about everything from Lyme disease, finding homes for stray cats and protecting the environment. Based on prior events, Marshall estimated about 7,300 people would attend Natick Days on Saturday. For five hours, the Commons was a microcosm for Natick community spirit, featuring people providing information about just about everything from the Allegro Music School to the Natick Praying Indians, from the Autism Alliance of MetroWest to the League of Women Voters and more. Raising money for the Natick High School ski team, sophomore slalom racer Maggie Downing bravely endured numerous cold water showers when bystanders paid $1 a chance to throw a beanbag into a hole that released a loaded balloon onto her head. A gaggle of youngsters crowded around Fran Flynn, self-proclaimed "magician extraordinaire,’’ as he blew up and twisted balloons into a menagerie of animals including his signature "long-necked dinosaur.’’ "You name it,’’ he told an excited 7-year-old Larry Young, "and I can make it.’’ In a corner of the Commons, Kevin Kelley, business agent for Carpenters Local 275, of Newton, showed 8-year-old Adrianna Rivkin Haaz how to hammer nails to make a toolbox. "Keep your elbow in,’’ he advised. "Smooth strokes. That’s it.’’ At 2 p.m., scores of people gathered around the Commons gazebo for the popular pie-eating contest, a crowd-pleasing competition that rewarded intestinal fortitude and an appetite for apple pies from Stop & Shop eaten without benefit of one's hands. Giving instructions, Dan Keefe III, assistant director of Recreation and Parks, told eight 9-to-12-year-old contestants they had to eat any pie bits that got stuck on their faces or in their hair and to take a break if they felt nauseous. As his father cheered, Drew Yanovitch ate his way to victory. While competitors tried to eat their pies still in the tins, the 10-year-old from Natick "dumped’’ his pie on the covered table where he quickly ate it and displayed his empty mouth to Keefe. Page 2 of 2 - In the intermediate class, Anthony Spinazola, an 8th grade football player, devoured his pie well ahead of the competition. The biggest surprise came in the adult class when the two female contestants, Srivani Idimadakala and Amy Adams, finished in a tie for first place ahead of several much-larger male competitors. Asked about their winning techniques, Adams said, "I just try to have fun’’ while Idimadakala, surrounded by her proud family, answered, "I like sweets.’’ Chris Bergeron is a Daily News staff writer. ...to the ensemble, weaving through a landscape of vigorously moving bodies to British composer Chris Brierley's score, commissioned for the piece. "Solo Countersolo is about the soloist versus the group, the mature performer (myself) and the younger group and a slow eruption of movement that is exhilarating and exuberant."
...Another bespectacled woman holds forth on her concept of ` "happy pessimism', as she breastfeeds her child. She opines that there would be greater happiness in the world if there were more parties, but her male companion dismisses such festivities as `temporary autonomous zones' (It will come as little surprise to some to learn that these highlighted phrases were coined by Nick Turvey, who is the artist spouse of director Joanna Hogg)."
