...at Coolidge Corner, Town Hall, Brookline High School, the Senior Center and Larz Anderson Park, where Brookline Day festivities were going on. "Diversity is something I grew up with. I have been in the Brookline education system since kindergarten, so I’ve always grown up in a very diverse culture and it has played such an important part in my identity. "I just don’t think they should consider cutting METCO or have a serious consideration of cutting METCO." The Override Study Committee tasked with figuring out alternative ways of trimming costs in Brookline looked into cutting the program and ultimately recommended to the selectmen to leave METCO intact in their 134-page report. However, some METCO supporters are concerned that the state subsidized voluntary bussing program isn’t completely off the table. "The bottom line is that until we have classrooms and teachers for every current (and projected) Brookline Public Schools student (resident and METCO), everything is still on the table," said Brookline resident and METCO supporter Rebecca Plaut Mautner in an email. Meng said there were only a few people who were really confused about why they were collecting signatures, given that the Override Study Committee seemed to ease concerns when they wrapped up their study. "What we’re really trying to do," said Meng, "is even if they said it wasn’t up for consideration, we just want to confirm that. We want to make sure that they know that this is really something we care about, so it’s just like an added step." The bigger issue on the street? "I found that a lot of people were not really aware of what METCO was," said Meng. Still, both Nsangou and Meng, a sophomore at Brookline High School, were pleased with how things went. "At the high school shuttle busbus stop, where I was posted with a couple others, nearly everyone took the time to listen to what we had to say," said Nsangou in an email. "Throughout the entire day, there were only a few who declined to sign the petition. Those few weren’t against keeping METCO — they just wanted more information. I knew we had done our job when every single person getting off of the bus returning from Larz had already signed the petition or spoken to someone with Friends of Brookline METCO." Page 2 of 2 - So what’s the next step? Nsangou and Meng will consult with the Friends of METCO core group and figure out how many signatures they will need to make a political impact, and then the plan is to present them the board of selectman and see where they take it from here. "We won’t just wipe our hands clean after this event," said Meng."
