"From a CIO's perspective, I would look at the CAO as someone I can benefit from," says analyst Reed. "While I'm thinking about analytics maybe 10% of the time, they're thinking about it 100% of the time. The work they're doing will benefit me and give me time back to focus on managing the technology environment, which is becoming increasingly complex. I see it as a winning partnership."
These are all elements of what business professor Thomas Johnson defines as "the modern obsession in business with "looking good by the numbers … no matter what damage (it) does to the underlying system of relationships that sustain any human organisation". Interestingly, most innovation nowadays is happening in sectors that reject the power of averages and rather focus on outliers. The "long tail", which is the term used to describe skewed distributions far from the mean, has become a buzzword for a new generation of business leaders, who are less interested in the shrinking group of average buyers and are building innovative corporate models at the fringes."
"A lot of CIOS are very wary of open source. I've never been able to figure that out because I've been very successful in avoiding costs by using great open source tools,” he said. “This would have taken a year longer if I'd used a commercial product, I'm convinced of that."
...there are many examples from which we can all learn how our industry can adopt new ways and methods for realizing from its assets," Alch said, "We have organized a group of speakers who will discuss how the mining industry can realize benefits of data and information technologies to optimize operations, increase productivity and evaluate and prioritize management and investment decisions."
