"These awards will further our work in keeping our kids safe in school and out of court and jails and will provide work for at-risk youth to keep them on the right path. They directly align with President Obama's My Brother's Keeper [MBK] initiative that focuses on young men of color, and I want to thank the staff at the Mayor's Office of Grants whose persistent work and coordination among many city agencies made possible our success in winning this funding."
In documents opposing the district's request for the funds, the charter said it "cannot afford to pay the moneys it owes the schools district."
"We were immersed in racial diversity during the time of the civil rights movement," Landow recalled. "The culture of the school and its faculty exemplified that each person was equal to the next. It was a natural open environment."
"We hear from social service providers and schools that a warm winter coat is one of the most requested items from families," Mazzucola said. "For many children, this is the only new article of clothing they will receive this year and we believe it will not only warm their body and souls throughout the winter, but it will give them confidence."
