Quotes

...head of the Stock Assessment and Modelling team within the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) Oceanic Fisheries Programme noted that "the most frustrating aspect is that the data have been collected and are just sitting on computers in countries and not contributing to the efforts to determine the health and safe harvest levels for the largest tuna resource in the world."
'Using this technology, we have produced high resolution images and digital terrain models to document the recent flooding,' said Mr Forstreuter. "We have clearly mapped the spacial extent of the flooding and the damage. Using this information, we have worked with our counterparts to give the government high quality scientific data that can be used to ensure that people do not move back into high risk areas that we know will flood again."
"Fiji, like many other countries, has observers on tuna vessels operating in Fiji waters and they collect information and yes that information is collected by Fiji and forwarded on to Fiji for analysis but it's also forwarded on to SPC for analysis" Mr Gillett said
"We had identified this earlier and we had made the decision known to the Ministry of Agriculture to concentrate on Ra and the Northern Division to help develop new sourcing options for the people" said Mrs Kaumaitotoya
