...Bowles said: "i am personally pleased as rapporteur of this regulation, and on behalf of the econ committee, that esa 2010 has become law today. we in the parliament can be proud of ourselves for negotiating maximum transparency when it comes to transmitting data on implicit liabilities in the public sector. some member states were extremely reluctant to make this compulsory, but without insisting on knowing pension liabilities and off balance sheet activities, the effectiveness of this regulation would have been drastically reduced. it may be boring statistics, but we might see fireworks when the results get published." The EP team also fought to ensure that derogations from the obligation to transmit data were kept to an absolute minimum, with a view to phasing them...

ECON chairperson Sharon Bowles said: "the current lack of any substantial progress to have greater gender balance on boards is unacceptable. critical situations call for drastic measures. i fully support the commission in taking further measures to address the gender gap regarding executive directors in the financial sector. if that means we need quotas, so be it: the time has come for action. public bodies need to start leading by example"
