Commission Vice-President Siim Kallas, in charge of transport, said: "for too long, private cars have determined how cities are planned. but nowadays, €100 billion are lost to our economies every year due to congestion, not to speak of the effects on people's time and health. therefore, i'm very pleased to see the enthusiastic uptake of this year's european mobility week. i'm sure there are plenty of good ideas around on how we can better shape where we live."
Commission vice president Siim Kallas, responsible for transport, said: "transport is fundamental to an efficient european economy, so investing in transport connections to fuel the economic recovery is more important than ever. areas of europe without good transport connections are not going to grow or prosper. member states need to seize this opportunity to bid for funding to be better connected, more competitive and provide smoother and quicker journeys for citizens and businesses."
"One particular thing is especially important - Russia must never be cozied up to," said Kallas. "if you try to do things to their liking, they won't talk to you, your stature will drop in their eyes."
"Non-discrimination is a basic principle of EU law," a spokeswoman for Kallas said before Dobrindt had unveiled his plans. "we have to see the details" she said
