Sun Appears Eerily 'Quiet' During Period Of Peak Activity

Our sun erupted with activity, sported several sunspots and unleashed massive solar flares just last month in what scientists dubbed a "solar mini max." But now, the sun appears to have gone strangely quiet. In fact, the side that faces us appeared spotless ... [Published Huffington Post - 4 hours ago]

Why Has the Sun Gone So Quiet?

Although the sun is our nearest star, we certainly don’t have it all figured out.Take, for example, that last week or so — the sun’s disk has been mostly sunspot-free and the X-ray output of the sun has plummeted since the beginning of July. This is in ... [Published Discovery Channel - Jul 23 2014]

A Solar Filament Erupts

What’s happened to our Sun? Nothing very unusual — it just threw a filament. Toward the middle of 2012, a long standing solar filament suddenly erupted into space producing an energetic Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). The filament had been held up for days ... Quotes

"It is weird, but it's not super weird," solar physicist Tony Phillips wrote on his website, Spaceweather.com, according to the Los Angeles Times. "To have a spotless day during solar maximum is odd, but thenthen again, this solar maximum we are in has been very wimpy."
All this, taking into account opinion of Phillips, only highlights how little is known of Heliophysical about what was happening on the Sun. "The main conclusion which can be drawn from this event is that we just can't predict the behavior of the Sun" , - the scientist believes...
"Sunspots can change all the time, but when you should be seeing many dozens at any one point of time, it's quite strange that we're not seeing any at all" Duffy told the Sydney Morning Herald. "We don't have any idea why that is."
However, tourists in the Arctic Circle are less fortunate as they are not likely to see the usually spectacular northern lights, or Aurora Borealis. "If you've got to the North Pole on one of these staggeringly expensive trips to see the northern lights, you'll be really feeling cheated because there'll be nothing for a while" , said Dr. Duffy
