Quotes

"Certain wavelengths either do not make it through Earth's atmosphere or cannot be seen by our eyes, so we cannot use normal optical telescopes to look at the spectrum" said Dean Pesnell, the project scientist for the Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland
Dr Milligan said: "Solar flares can have significant effects on modern life. For example, they can throw GPS off by quite significant distances - tens of metres - so considering how many services now rely on GPS, that's a lot of potential for chaos."
"We are in constant awe of our closest star, the most dynamic and moody object in the solar system, and unprecedented data from recent missions like SDO (Solar Dynamics Observatory) and IRIS (NASA's Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph) are allowing solar scientists to address some of the mysteries that have plagued them for decades" said Gilbert, of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md
Northrop Grumman Information Systems Intelligence Systems and Reconnaissance division vice-president and general manager Linnie Haynesworth said: "The Northrop Grumman SEMS team ensures all systems are operational and available, enabling the air force to provide the continuous, complete and current weather information that is so critical to our military for mission success."
