Halfway through the show I called home, and my wife informed me that the plumbing in the downstairs bathroom was clogged, and the dog had gone outside and rolled around in something dead. And she wondered: Was I having a nice time? It was time for me ... [Published Stereophile - Sep 30 2014]

NY Audio Show 2014: Day 1

As with so many children who were raised in upstate New York in the 1950s and '60s, the first associations I forged with the word Brooklyn were not positive. Mine arrived through the transom of a novel called A Tree Grows in Brooklyn . I don't remember ... [Published Stereophile - Sep 27 2014]

Worlds of Pop

No matter how intriguing it might look on paper, or in some manager or record label head’s fevered brain, the whole “supergroup” thing is usually a bust. I blame Asia, Gogmagog, and Bad English because let’s face it, Cream and Derek & the Dominos made ... [Published Stereophile - Sep 27 2014]

In the March 2010 issue I reviewed Dynaudio's Excite X12 bookshelf speaker ($1200/pair), then the least expensive speaker in Dynaudio's line. It mightily impressed me, and I wrote that it had "become my new benchmark for speakers costing under $2000/pair." ... [Published Stereophile - Sep 26 2014]

Quotes

"I don't know of any other classical composers who also perform jazz," he said. "I look at it like Baskin & Robbins. For example, I'm currently editing my very somber Oratorio, The Wiener Psalm , for orchestra, bass singer, and men's choir. That would be like pistachio ice cream, and jazz would be like blueberry. Doing both keeps things more interesting. It's fresh all the time, and I don't stagnate. I get bored doing the same thing over and over. If I had to go onon the road to play the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto 100 times in a row, I don't know how I'd make art out of it."
Art Dudley's final question to the panel was "what component will you grab when you find out your house in on fire?" The consensus among the panelist was that it would be their Garrard 301, a great turntable that has been out of production for more than 40 years...
...were made, including an observation by Mikey that likened the overabundance of poor-quality digital music files to an all-you-can-eat buffet: "You think you're going to love it, but two hours later you realize you shouldn't have gone there."
...two year period in Newman’s Woodstock, NY studio but as he says in the official bio, there was still a “certain amount of travel still figured in, ` "chasing Neko around’ to Texas and Vermont, and heading back to Canada for much of the work involving the three songs written and sung by Bejar.” Built on a computer, and tinkered and tweaked over time, the sound here, not surprisingly, is good not great. Less processing, greater dynamics and a more natural edge to the sound would have helped immensely, but Newman is a firm practitioner of puttingthepowerinpowerpop and the Brill Bruisers is a classic example of what he does, a process effectively evoked by these lines from "Champions of Red Wine.""
