Quotes

"We have a real private sector mentality and the contacts of the firms who support us are hugely helpful" said Ms Kilmurray
"We are continuing to invest in Ireland and will be spending €70m in modernising our stores this year and in opening six new Express or Metro stores. Total investment last year was €59m" he added
"The announcements made today are natural consequences of the strategic changes we first began over a year ago and which conclude today" Chief Executive Philip Clarke said
Liam Igoe and Patrick Higgins of Goodbody commented : "Tesco reported lfl growth (excl petrol) of 0.5% in Q4 to February 23rd, representing the first positive quarter of the year. Food performance within this was even stronger as its general merchandise sales fell 5%. Sales benefited from the re-launch of its Everyday Value range as well as the re-launch of over 3,500 own label products. The company comments that the impact of the horsemeat scandal appears to have been short-lived and restricted to those areas directly affected (especially frozen meat products). Meanwhile, in Ireland its lfl sales have deteriorated as the year progressed. At the start of the financial year Tesco Ireland saw lfl growth of 0.4% in Q1 but this steadily worsened as the year progressed and culminated in lfl declines of 1.4% in Q4."
