"Now is the time for young people who believe passionately in protecting these species to speak out before it's too lat"
...4% in April, but warned that any meaningful comparison with the same period last year is difficult because of the end of the stamp duty holiday. $ "Our forward estimate is that gross lending in April was £12.1 billion. This would have been 4% up on March. The comparison with April last year – 21% higher – is flattered by the temporary dearth of house buying activity immediately following the closure of the stamp duty concession,” said Bob Pannell, the organisation’s chief economist. $ "The true underlying position is that April is likely to have been one of the strongest months for lending activity since late 2008, but not as strong as the year-earlier comparison suggests.$ Gross lending on a seasonally adjusted basis has been running comfortably above £12 billion for several months, but this is still barely half the average level of lending seen in 2003-4." $ Industry reaction to the figures was broadly positive. Brian Murphy, head of lending at Mortgage Advice Bureau (MAB) said: “We shouldn’t be put off by the end of the stamp duty holiday affecting year-on-year comparisons.$ A 4% boost to mortgage lending since March this year makes April one of the strongest months in the last four years, and we also saw a 10% monthly spike in mortgage applications during April including 13% more interest from homebuyers. $ “The government's interest in the housing market has put property back in the spotlight and drawn attention to the attractive deals that are out there. Average five year fixed rates reached 4% in April, which is the lowest they have been since the recession. The publicity around Help To Buy has already prompted a surge of interest in new build property, and people looking to sell their homes are also unlikely to find a shortage of willing buyers provided they are sensibly priced. $ “While it is true the housing market is making steady rather than rapid progress, positive figures for purchase activity and first-time buyers are especially encouraging as they show that attention is beginning to focus where it is needed the most.” $ Peter Williams, executive director of the Intermediary Mortgage Lenders Association (IMLA) said: “With the government favouring short-term housing and mortgage lending initiatives to boost the economy, we may have to get used to ‘distorted’ year-on-year comparisons making it difficult to assess market growth.$ $ “It has certainly been a steady month with activity up compared to March. But the after-effects of the stamp duty holiday confuse the picture when it comes to determining just how much progress has been made in the last twelve months. $ “With Help To Buy following New Buy, First Buy and the Funding for Lending Scheme, no-one can accuse the government of turning a blind eye to the housing and mortgage markets. But it is unlikely that initiatives which exaggerate activity over limited periods of time will add upup to consistent and meaningful growth unless we decide exactly what the future of the industry should look like. $ “We are concerned that this broad discussion is yet to happen and feel it should be an urgent priority in order to avoid distorting the market and further unintended consequences.”"
"Families are often best placed to respond to those needs. No intelligent government can continue to ignore the urgent priority of giving support and practical encouragement to marriage and family stability as the first response to growing social needs."
...to reinforce its position in education; "The early indoctrination of children is very important for the continuation of any religion," he said. "Christians know this and Muslims know it. The Church of England has far more primary schools under its control than secondary ones. It knows it needs to start the process earlier in order to keep people in the fold."
