Quotes

..."We had a tremendous second quarter with sales and earnings that were well ahead of plan," said David Sharp, President and Chief Executive Officer. "Our strong performance included sales gains in each of our reporting segments- Wholesale, Retail and Military. In Wholesale, it was especially gratifying to see our work and hunting categories post strong double digit sales increases after successfully navigating through a second consecutive mild winter. At the same time, Durango's momentum accelerated during the second quarter as the brand's western and lifestyle collections collectively were up 68% year over year while our commercial military business reversed recent trends to post a high single digit sales gain. In Retail, we continued to see steady progress in transitioning our Lehigh customers to our web based solution. Increased business-to-consumer e-commerce sales also contributed to the improvement in our Retail business. And our Military segment sales increased significantly in the quarter as production ramped up on our current U S military contract. With our top-line firing on all cylinders, we were able to drive 410 basis points of operating expense leverage and deliver earnings per share that were up eightfold from a year ago." Net sales for the second quarter increased 33.8% to $59.4 million compared to $44.4 million a year ago...
"Looking ahead, reports from the recent semiconductor industry tradeshow continue to project that third quarter OEM shipments may be down from the second quarter. In our other markets, the global economy continues to improve and we continue to search out and leverage growth opportunities in a strategic manner. Based on these factors, and looking at current business levels, we anticipate that sales in the third quarter may range from $170 million to $190 million, and at these volumes, our non-GAAP net earnings could range from $0.28 to $0.42 per share."
"The first half of 2014 was a transition period for Orchids. We completed our strategic partnership with Fabrica in June, which should allow Orchids to effectively and efficiently service new and existing customers in the western United States. Operationally, we were able to confirm that increased efficiencies with existing assets could make available an additional one million cases of capacity over 2013 capacity levels. This capacity gain, combined with our cost management programs, has improved variable margin capacity for future sales. We scaled back production of converted products during the second quarter in order to reduce costs, match sales volume requirements, and reduce the number of weeks of inventory we keep onon hand to support sales, while maintaining high customer service levels. The reduced production of finished goods inventory during the second quarter also allowed us to economically build parent roll inventory for consumption during the construction phase of our new paper machine project. Strategically, the previously announced $30.4 million of capital projects are progressing as planned and are expected to significantly increase our capacity to prepare for future growth, improve our manufacturing flexibility and lower our cost structure."
Gary Halverson, Cliffs President and Chief Executive Officer, said, "We continue to take prudent and decisive actions to optimize the business in the face of continued commodity pricing pressures, which have created a challenging business climate for Cliffs and our industry. During the quarter, our team cut costs across the board and significantly reduced our capital expenditures, while enhancing our liquidity by successfully amending our revolving credit facility. We remain focused on controlling what we can control in a volatile environment, and are confident we have the right strategy to operate and extract value from our assets."
