Quotes

"Headquartered here, it was one of the most important iron and steel manufacturers in the nation. In 1863, Bethlehem Iron Co. began producing railroad rails. Steel manufacturing began in 1873 with armor plate and guns forged for the U S Navy. The plant was a major defense manufacturer for the Allied Forces during both World Wars. Structural steel produced here was used to build many iconic skyscrapers and long-span bridges. The plant closed in 1995."
What Secretary of State John Kerry has called the "tortured debate over terminology” is a mess of the administration’s own making. The White House has no problem using the term “war” when it comes to al-Qaida. The National Counterterrorism Strategy emphasizes that “we are at war with a specific organization — al-Qa ida.” Elsewhere, it notes that al-Qaida is an umbrella term that encompasses the group’s “affiliates and adherents” — a list which includes al-Qaida in Iraq, the Islamic StateIslamic State group in an earlier iteration. So, in truth, the United States has been at war with the Islamic State for years. Yet today, we seem to be bashful about saying precisely that."

While the USS Arizona marks where the war began, the USS Missouri marks where it ended" we were told by military personnel at the site
Here the Japanese record is best summarized by Max Hastings's superb account in "Retribution." Hastings writes, "The casual sadism of the Japanese towards their prisoners was so widespread, indeed, almost universal, that it must be considered institutional."
